Matrjoschkas - und ihre Herkunft

Matrjoschkas: Eine Jahrhunderte alte, in Rußland entstandene Tradition? Nicht ganz, sie sind erst 100 Jahre alt und wurden damals aus Japan importiert. Dennoch kann man sich keine Urlaubsreise nach Rußland vorstellen, ohne mit einer dieser liebenswerten Schachtelpuppen als Andenken nach Hause zu kommen...

    I have one that has the leaders of the former USSR nesting together. Not pretty, but it is educational!

    Hmm, maybe that matryoshka was a little subversive during the Communist era. I'm not sure if the former Soviet leaders liked it...

    I think that was the point! I don't think it came from the USSR though. I like to keep it on a shelf with a piece of the Berlin Wall. It makes an interesting historical statement. (Though, currently both are in a box somewhere in the basement.)
