Unterwegs mit einer Royal Scot

Das waren noch Zeiten, als man mit einem von einer Dampflokomotive der Royal Scot-Serie gezogenen Zug von Südengland nach Schottland reisen konnte!

  1. It reminds me of the train in Harry Potter.

  2. Have you watched all parts of the Harry Potter film series? Well, I haven't watched any of them, because I guessed that they would not fit my taste. Of course, it is only an assumption...
Though, some years ago I was very surpried when I noticed how much I liked the Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Maybe, I should give Harry Potter a try some day!

  3. I read the first 5 books and I quite liked them. I have not seen the newest movie yet, but I will someday. I like that the movies are very true to the books. My only quibble is that at first they used a style of dress that was 1950's like, which made the movie seem timeless. Then they started dressing the kids in modern clothing, which I think will make the movies dated in a few years.

Another odd thing about the books; they were "translated" into a more American English fore the US market. That drives me nuts. I think they should have been left in the original. They could have added footnotes to explain the differences and then all of the kids reading it might have had a better understanding of how cultures differ.

  4. I absolutely agree with your point of view concerning the translation to American English, it is surely not necessary. Instead, it can be really enriching to read or listen to a language that differs slightly from the own one.

Sometimes I see movies from our southern neighboring country Austria. The Austrians have some words of their own and their dialect is somehow weird (listen to Arnold Schwarzenegger...), but I cannot imagine to watch such a movie in a synchronized version. Fortunately, they are always shown as originals.

  5. Sadly, there has been a lot of Arnold Schwarzenegger on TV lately. It seems he had a child with the his housekeeper. His wife is not happy about that.

I am glad, however, that talk of him running for president has finally stopped. A naturalized person can not run for president, yet some people wanted to change the law to allow it. Mind you, many of those same people are the ones that try to claim that Obama is not American. They try to say that he was not born here. Which does not matter. Obama had an American mother, it doesn't matter where he was born. The law says you are an American "by birth or by blood". I don't know what Civics classes these people took!

  6. I guess those people are blinded by their ideology... Schwarzenegger's affair was in the news even here in Germany as well as the absurd discussion about Obama's place of birth.

I'm wondering at all those talks of presidential candidates already now, more than a year before the election. On the other hand, I know that your political system is a bit different from ours.
